• Ephesians 3:17-19
“and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Paul prays that Christ would dwell in your heart through faith — and that you would be rooted and firmly established in love.
Why love?
Because whatever you are rooted in shapes everything.
If you’re rooted in achievement, you’ll panic when you fail.
If you’re rooted in approval, you’ll bend to keep people happy.
If you’re rooted in comparison, you’ll never feel secure.
But if you’re rooted in love — real, unchanging, Christ-centered love — you become steady.
So what are you actually rooted in right now?
Paul says he wants you to grasp how wide, long, high, and deep Christ’s love is.
That wording feels almost overwhelming.
- Wide enough to include you when you feel like the exception.
- Long enough to outlast your worst season.
- High enough to lift you out of shame.
- Deep enough to reach you in the lowest emotional place.
Which dimension do you struggle to believe most?
Is it wide — do you feel excluded?
Is it long — do you think it will run out?
Is it high — do you feel stuck in guilt?
Is it deep — do you feel too far gone?
Then Paul says this love “surpasses knowledge.”
That means you can memorize verses and still not rest.
You can serve and still feel insecure.
You can lead and still secretly wonder if God is disappointed.
Why?
- Because understanding love intellectually is different from being anchored in it.
Being anchored means when you fail, you don’t spiral into identity crisis.
When you’re corrected, you don’t collapse into shame.
When you’re overlooked, you don’t crumble.
Because your foundation isn’t people’s reactions.
It’s His love.
Here’s something to really sit with:
If you truly believed you were deeply rooted in Christ’s love…
Would you still be so afraid of disappointing others?
Would you still chase validation?
Would you still avoid God after you mess up? Or would you move toward Him faster?
Paul’s prayer isn’t shallow.
He’s praying that love becomes the ground beneath your feet.
Not a concept. A foundation.
