When you think of “discipline,” what comes to mind?
— Do you see it as love… or punishment?
Many of us struggle with discipline because it feels uncomfortable. But Scripture shows discipline is not rejection — it is proof of love.
• Proverbs 3:11-12
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.”
• Hebrews 12:6
“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
• Hebrews 12:11
“No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Discipline Reveals Our True Identity
— Discipline is not a sign that God is distant.
It is proof that we are sons and daughters.
God corrects what He claims.
When we resist correction, we often reveal something deeper:
• Pride (“I know better.”)
• Self-rule (“I want control.”)
• Comfort (“I don’t want to change.”)
But love refuses to let us stay spiritually immature.
God’s discipline is not about behavior modification.
It is about heart transformation.

Discipline Exposes What We Worship
Sometimes what hurts most isn’t the discipline —
it’s what God is removing.
When He confronts:
• Our secret sin
• Our need for approval
• Our dependence on comfort
• Our hidden idols
It feels painful because something we love is being challenged.
But God disciplines not to take joy from us —
He disciplines to remove what will destroy us.

Discipline Produces Holiness
Hebrews 12:10 says God disciplines us “for our good, that we may share in His holiness.”
Holiness means:
• Set apart
• Refined
• Resembling Christ
Even Jesus “learned obedience through what He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8).
If suffering shaped the Son of God, why would we expect growth without refinement?
God is more committed to our character than our comfort.
