My Cup Overflows

When we share something with others, we can only share what we already have. A person must first possess something before they can give it away.

Psalm 23:5 says:

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

For a cup to overflow, it must first be filled. Imagine pouring water into a cup continuously. As the cup fills, it eventually overflows. However, if you keep stopping and starting, it takes much longer for the cup to overflow.

The beautiful thing is that we have the freedom to choose. We decide whether we continue pouring into our cup or stop. God continually invites us into His presence, but He doesn’t force us to spend time with Him. Every day, we choose whether to seek Him, read His Word, pray, and remain connected to Him. Those choices determine whether our cup is being filled or left half empty.

Our spiritual lives work the same way. When we consistently spend time with God, we are feeding our spirit and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill us. As we continue seeking Him, our hearts become so full that what He has placed within us naturally begins to overflow.

When our cup overflows, the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and grace God has poured into us begin to flow into the lives of others. We don’t have to strive to make it happen—it becomes the natural result of staying close to Him.

If we stop pouring into our spiritual lives, we shouldn’t be surprised when there’s little left to give. But when we continually choose His presence, our cup doesn’t just stay full; it overflows.

Reflection:
What choice are you making today? Are you intentionally allowing God to fill your cup, or have you stopped pouring?
