Recently, I made a bet using a free promotional gift worth about $200. It started as something small. I thought I could stop whenever I wanted, but one decision led to another until I eventually lost it all.
That experience reminded me of a spiritual truth: loss comes in different ways.
There are losses that happen because of our own choices, and there are losses that happen through no fault of our own.
1. Some losses are the result of our choices.
God has given us free will, and our decisions carry consequences.
- Galatians 6:7
“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”
The prodigal son chose to leave his father, squandered his inheritance, and eventually found himself hungry and broken (Luke 15:11–24). Samson slowly compromised his calling until he lost his strength, his freedom, and his eyesight (Judges 16).
Sometimes we also make promises to God:
“I’ll stay faithful.”
“I’ll obey you.”
“I’ll trust you.”
“I won’t do it again”
Yet we compromise little by little. God forgives us when we repent, but He often allows us to
experience the consequences of our actions so that we grow in wisdom and dependence on Him.
Hebrews 12:11 reminds us:
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields
the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

2. Some losses are not our fault.
Not every loss is caused by sin.
– Sometimes we lose our health.
– Sometimes we lose loved ones.
– Sometimes we lose opportunities, jobs, friendships, or dreams through circumstances beyond our control.
Job lost his children, wealth, and health, not because he sinned, but because God allowed him to be tested (Job 1–2). Yet in the end, “the Lord restored the fortunes of Job… and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before” (Job 42:10).
When Life is not fair, but God is always faithful.

3. God is a God of restoration.
Whether our loss came from our own mistakes or from circumstances beyond our control, God specializes in restoration.
Joel 2:25 says,
“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.”
Romans 8:28 declares,
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for
those who are called according to his purpose.”
God may not always restore exactly what was lost, but He always restores according to His perfect wisdom and purpose. He can restore joy after sorrow, hope after disappointment, peace after failure, and purpose after brokenness.
I lost a $200 gift because of my own choices. It was a small reminder that choices have consequences.
But it also reminded me of something even greater:
There are losses we bring on ourselves.
There are losses we never asked for.
Yet in every kind of loss, God invites us to come back to Him so he can provide restoration in our life.
If our loss came through sin, He offers forgiveness.
If our loss came through suffering, He offers comfort.
And in every season, He remains the God who restores.
