June 18 – When Jesus Calls You Out of the Grave

By June 18th, 2026Devotional

John 11:43-44 (NIV)
“When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’”

The story of Lazarus is one of the most powerful miracles Jesus performed. Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived. To everyone around him, the situation seemed hopeless. His family was grieving, his friends had accepted the loss, and no one expected what Jesus was about to do.
But Jesus had a different plan.

With just a few words, Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, and Lazarus walked out alive. What seemed impossible became possible because Jesus had the power to bring life where there was death.
As teenagers, we may not be physically dead like Lazarus was, but sometimes, we can feel stuck in things that keep us from living the life God wants for us. Maybe it’s fear, insecurity, peer pressure, anxiety, anger, guilt, or the feeling that we’ll never be good enough. These struggles can feel like “grave clothes” that hold us back.
The amazing thing about this story is that Jesus didn’t leave Lazarus in the tomb. He called him out. In the same way, Jesus calls us to step out of whatever is keeping us trapped. He calls us to trust Him, follow Him, and live differently.

Notice that after Lazarus came out, Jesus told the people around him, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” Sometimes God uses friends, family members, youth leaders, teachers, and other believers to help us grow and leave old habits behind. We weren’t meant to walk through life alone.
No matter what you’re facing right now, remember this truth: Jesus specializes in bringing hope into hopeless situations. What looks impossible to you is never impossible for Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is something in your life that feels like a “grave cloth” holding you back from growing closer to God?
  2. Have you ever faced a situation that seemed hopeless? How did God help you through it?
  3. Why do you think Jesus waited before coming to Lazarus instead of rushing there immediately?

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us through Lazarus that nothing is impossible for You. When we feel stuck, discouraged, or overwhelmed, remind us that Jesus has the power to bring new life and hope. Help us let go of anything that keeps us from following You fully. Give us the courage to trust Your plan, even when we don’t understand what You’re doing. Surround us with people who encourage our faith and help us grow closer to You each day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
