The Prodigal Son Coming Home

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15:19

“I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”

1. How do we measure our worth?

The son came home believing that he was no longer worthy to be called his father’s son.

He had already decided what his worth was based on what he had done.

The son defined his worth by :

→ “I am no longer worthy..”

But…

2. The Father didn’t see him that way.

The Father still showed love toward his son despite everything.

He waited for his son’s return.

looking from afar = eagerly waiting

The Father didn’t measure his son’s worth by his mistakes.

The son saw himself as unworthy, but the Father still viewed his son as worthy.

Why?

→ Because love covers a multitude of sins.

The son focused on what he had done.

The Father focused on who he was — his son.

3. Luke 15:18–19, 21

There is a repetition throughout the son’s words:

“Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.”

“I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”

Why is this repetition significant?

The son truly believed that he didn’t deserve to be a son anymore.

But believing something does not mean it is the truth.

There are so many voices that can speak into our minds.

But just because you hear a voice or believe a thought doesn’t mean it is true.

DISCERN YOUR THOUGHTS.

Not every thought deserves to be believed.
