Out Of The Heart

The importance of guarding our hearts is vital because everything we do and say comes from the heart.

Sometimes, when a person tends to use foul language, or when they’re angry and speak right there in the moment, it’s not always that they have trouble keeping their mouth shut or controlling what they say. It has more to do with what’s already in their heart.

There are intentions behind the words that come out of a person’s mouth. And if it’s not an intention, sometimes there is built-up resentment or something already sitting in their heart and mind that eventually comes out through their words.

In Matthew 12:34, it says:

“You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

It’s not always that the words themselves are the problem. The bigger issue is that the heart was already corrupted to begin with, which caused the person to speak that way.

Our words can show where our heart is set. Our tongue exposes what is inside of us.

James 3:5–6 teaches us how powerful our words are and how they can reveal what is in our hearts. It’s not just about trying to restrain our mouths or control every word that comes out. Instead, we need to allow god to change what is on the inside — our heart.

Your words are a mirror of what’s inside, revealing what is underneath and what may be hidden.
