Speaker: Sia Piang Pu — Faith That Relies on Jesus
In Matthew 17:20, Jesus said that if we have faith even as small as a mustard seed, we can say to a mountain, “Move,” and it will move. This week, we are going to focus on three key words: faith, mustard seed, and speaking to the mountain.
- Faith
The faith Jesus talks about is not faith in ourselves. It is not believing, “I can become 6 feet tall” or “I can become Cristiano Ronaldo if I just believe hard enough.”
The faith Jesus wants is trusting and relying on Him.
When we put all our faith in ourselves, our abilities, or our accomplishments, that faith can disappear when hard times come. But Jesus never changes. He is forever, so our faith in Him can remain strong even during difficult seasons.

- The Mustard Seed
Why did Jesus mention a mustard seed?
A mustard seed is very small. Jesus was teaching that God is not looking for huge faith. Even a small amount of genuine faith in Him is powerful.
In Matthew 15:28, Jesus praised a woman for having great faith. Why was her faith great? She trusted that only Jesus could help her daughter from being possessed.
Her faith was not great because she was strong. Her faith was great because she fully trusted Jesus.
This reminds us that we do not move mountains through our own strength. Jesus is the one doing the work.

- “Say to This Mountain”
Jesus said we can “say to this mountain.”
The Bible teaches that faith is not only something we believe in our hearts. It is also something we confess with our mouths.
Just as a bank account is useless if you never use your bank card, faith must be expressed. If we believe God’s promises, we should speak them and declare them.
When we confess what God says, we are showing that we trust Him to act.

David’s Example
David was often overlooked by his family, but he did not let that define him. In Psalm 23, David says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” David knew who he belonged to. His identity came from God, not from what other people thought about him. Because David trusted God, he was able to face giants and challenges with confidence. In 1 Samuel 17:26, David focused on God’s power rather than the size of the problem.
God’s Promises Never Fail
When God made His promise to Abraham, it was based on God’s faithfulness, not Abraham’s perfection. God always keeps His promises. Galatians 3:26-29 teaches that through faith in Christ, we become part of God’s family and share in the promises given to Abraham.
