“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

This whole verse is really centered on one simple but serious idea: new wine and old wineskins don’t mix.
In Jesus’ time, wine wasn’t just poured into glass bottles. It was stored in animal skins. When new wine was still fermenting, it needed space to expand. A fresh wineskin could stretch with it. But an old wineskin had already been used and stretched out—it was dry, stiff, and no longer flexible. So if new wine was poured into it, the pressure from the fermentation would cause it to burst.
And Jesus doesn’t soften that picture. He says when that happens, both are ruined—the wine is lost, and the wineskin is destroyed.
That’s the weight of the illustration. The issue isn’t that the wine is bad or the wineskin is bad—it’s that they are incompatible. New wine needs something that can stretch, grow, and adjust. Old wineskins can’t do that anymore.

“New wine” represents what God is doing in the new covenant through Jesus—the work of the Holy Spirit, grace, and new life that He brings. “Old wineskins” represent the old religious system that had become rigid, fixed, and unable to carry what God was now revealing.
Jesus is making it clear: you cannot contain new life in an old structure. If you try, something will eventually break. Either the new thing God is doing gets restricted and lost, or the old structure collapses under the pressure.
